I drove a '41 Chevy with a little lever on the side of the shifter. It lets you shift into reverse, which is left and down.
It was scary in the winter because sometimes my glove would catch on the lever at a stop sign/light and what I thought was second gear was actually reverse...makes for some excitment at the intersection!
