Although I agree with you in part, unfortunately it's the way of the world my friend.
I've owned every kind of Power Wagon from non running wrecks to great original condition trucks to fully restored trucks. I do not consider myself to be in this hobby for profit & I think my wife Susan may want to voice an opinion here!
I can honestly say that other than the blue 46 WDX, I've never broken even on any one of my trucks. I honestly have no idea what the WDX cost to restore since I've never had any desire to add it up. All I know is it was saved from the junk yard & the new owner who bought it was happy to pay the price he paid. 50 years from now the truck will be back in the condition that you prefer & it will once again be affordable. If no one had restored this truck it surely would have been sent to the junk yard like so many other great old trucks that have been neglected over the years.
If you were looking for a brand new truck would you be happy buying one with a crappie Maaco paint job or with rust or broken windows? Why not fix them properly?
I agree, if you have a nice original truck like Clint Dixon's or like Judd's ex Wilbur, they are best preserved. That's why I sold Wilbur...with our winters here I would have had to paint it & that would have been a shame.
If you're happy playing the part of the guy with the Power Wagon's rusting out in his field...never for sale & sitting around telling old war stories about when it used to run, that's you're prerogative but I'd just as soon restore the dilapidated ones so that my grand children get the privilege of driving an old Power Wagon too.
As for the market...we can't control that.
There will always be collectors out there willing to buy anything worth collecting & whether you like it or not, P/W's have become collectible.
If you sleep better at night considering yourself better than any other Power Wagon owners coming from the original "PW group"....have a nice sleep.
