Tom, Here's what the guys do that work on our Detroit Diesels in our Tugs...they have a propane heater & they take a meticulously cleaned 5 gallon tin pail & pour the oil into the pail. They heat the oil until it's good & hot. How hot you ask? I don't actually know what temperature the bypass in your oil pump closes but I guess you want it at operating temperature. Put on a pair of welding gloves & carefully pour in the oil.
Pull the coil wire from the coil & crank the engine until you build pressure & then re-connect & fire her up!
They swear by it.
