Dodge built there first factory Diesel for there trucks in 1939, according to the specs it displaced 331 cu.in. and developed 96hp and 225lbs or torque at 1000 rpm, its compression ratio was 14.4 to 1. Itws general size, engine mountings, and crankcase structure were identical with dodge's 3 ton gas engine, which saved money in the manufacturing andinstallation of the engine. The engine featured full length water jackets, valve seat inserts, bypas, jacket water thermostat, overhead valves and a chain driven camshaft. The block was of nickel-moly alloy.
To offer proof to the truck buying public that the dodge diesel was real, Dodge conducted an amazing demonstration of the diesels performance and dependability. The test run was a 6378 mile run from New York to Los Angeles,to San Francisco and then back to New york. A four man crew drove this in 187 hours on 627 gallons of fuel. The test truck was a Dodge 3 ton TKDA.
in 1939 dodge sold 75 diesel trucks, 1940 they sold 134 and for 1941 they sold 195.
