New 318...10 quarts of oil????

HELP!
I just emptied the oilpan of my newly rebuilt LA-318, and was shocked to see 10 quarts in the drain pan. Is this right?
The 318 came out of an early 70's Dodge pickup with a NP 435, and powersteering.
The dipstick doesn't read but a drop on the end...an aftermarket chrome dipstick put in by the rebuilder/the shop that did the C3PW's body work/paint.

fill it with 5-6 quarts, make a new dipstick - casebro 6:33PM 09/13/2003
