I'm sure you know this but, if it's the front, you won't be able to pull the other axle piece out from the "outside". You'll have to pull the drum and remove the bolts (5 I think) that hold the spindle on. Pop the spindel off and the shaft will come out the back. The tricks everyone is suggesting will work for the rear, but you'll just get frustrated trying them on the front.
I only ask because you mentioned the knuckle housing in another post and it also looks like the axle shaft is splined.
