Fuel gauge -sending unit

I always hear talk of fuel gauge repair/calibration but, I never seem to notice anything on repairing/calibrating or even the availablity of the sending unit or what other type sendinding unit that would work with the original fuel gauge. Are any NOS sending units available or are many used and working units available?
