Need help putting together a travel toolbox

I am traveling to LA in Sept to pick up a 64 Crewcab and drive it back to Pittsburgh.
Looking for some suggestions of things I would not want to be without on my trip home (other than my credit card)! I haven't decided whether to purchase a small box here and fill it with some tools or to purchase them there when I arrive (Cannot have enough extra tools)! Any ideas on necessities would be appreciated.
