When my father was at Boeing working on Minuteman probably around 1970, they had some major problem due to helicoils (tm) coming out. Apparently it was quite a crisis at the time. When it was all over they came out with an edict of "thou shalt not ever use a helicoil (tm)", and presented my father with a gold-plated helicoil (tm) on a tie clip. I think I still have it somewhere.
As for the mechanic's worst nightmare, I agree. I'm finally learning to tell when I'm twisting too hard on something before I break it (most of the time). Kroil and heat have a much better chance of getting the screw out or the nut off while there's still something to grab onto.
