If it's a newer (80s or 90s) Patrol engine it's a ~4.0L six and is not junk, is a good engine that will put out about 100HP@3600 and 180ft-lb@2000 naturally aspirated; ~140-150HP and about 250 ft-lb with aftermarket turbo. The earlier patrols have I believe the SD33 which while not exactly junk is way weak and even turbocharged puts out what the later engine puts out naturally aspirated. But another problem is that the SD33 will fit but the bigger engine won't. I've measured Power Wagon/M37s for the better known Land Cruiser H series 4.0-4.2L sixes, and it's too short. It's pretty much gotta be a 4-banger until someone comes out with a compact V6 diesel. There's some powerful 4 cyl diesels, call me at 907-349-8673 or e-mail me if you want to know more about the wonders of 4cyl diesels and 5 speeds in old Dodges. My specialty.
