Garret,
The 360 motor is known as an "LA" series engine and includes the 273,318,340 and 360. Virtually all parts on these engines are interchangable except the 360 cranks which have larger main journals (and are ALL cast). (I know, the 340 six-packs had eternally ballanced engines and need special dampenrs and flywheels...).
The 413 motor is known as an "RB" motor, in the same family as the 426 wedge, and the 440. Again all parts on these motors interchange with the exception of the sixpack cranks, dampeners and flywheels. They are related to the "b series engines which includes the 350, 361, 383 and 400, with which many parts will interchange. The Big blocks, as these are called, all share the same bellhousing bolt patern, which is different from the small blocks.
This means, if it's an auto trans 360 it has an A727 torqueflight, the A means smallblock bellhousing. To put a bigblock in you need a B727, and if your t/c is married, it must be out of a big block truck. This don't count motormounts, etc.
The way to tell If you have a Max wedge 413 is to check the casting numbers on the cylender heads. A 413 max has no. 2402286, the 426 is 2463209('63) or 2406518('64). The standard no.'s were 2206324('61-62), or 2463200('63) (i don't have the numbers for the '58-'60 heads, but hey are dogs with small ports and valves).
The later model 440 HiPo heads were much better than the standard 413/426 heads. the Max wedge heads are valuable to collectors who need them to complete a car. Most were used up in drag cars in the '60's. They had huge ports and 1.88" exh. valves.
Good luck! And if you wanna stealth motor, drop a 340 forged crank 4bbl in your truck. Most smog guys won't know, it'll most likely pass inspection if the comp. ratio is below 10-1 (after '71) and its tuned up right, and they make a bit more power, even with less ci.
