I am pretty sure that in 1991 1/2 they added a speed sensor that was mechanically driven. This was necessary to make the od functional. 1991 1/2 was when they finally added an od to the automatics. I am not sure if the speedo's were electronic before that, but I am 99% sure they all were after that.
