Take a NE-2 or similar neon lamp, tape it to the tip of the antenna. Its important to keep the lamp base or pig tail wires insulated from the antenna. The lamp base or pig tails is not needed. When you key the radio, the neon gas in the NE-2 is ionized and glows a orange/red color. Any small type Gas Discharge Tube ie, NE-2 will work. I got some at lowes last week to replace dead ones on my hot tub control panel. Doesn't do anything, but looks neat.
If you have enough power, a flourscent tube will also light.
