Very good information here. Chloride Zinc is easy to find but non-cyanide Cadmium is rare. Also remember that the cleaning process can cause hydrogen embrittlement as well as the plating process. Bottom line is that when done correctly and baked it works fine. Just be sure to use a quality plater. Personally I would just paint the wheel rings as I've seen too much of what goes on inside a plating shop. Kind of like folks who work in meat packing plants and won't eat what they sell.
