Be careful when plating critical components. The cleaning and plating process itself causes a condition known as hydrogen embrittlement. Generally the harder the steel the worse the problem is. It can be relieved by proper heat treating after plating but my general rule of thumb for critical items (suspension, steering, wheels, brakes, etc.) is to stay safe and paint it. Advice from an old plater from way back.
