Can anyone give advice on the proper way to set the timing on a 318 automatic carrying a heavy load in sand? My truck has a pretty bad case of valve clatter that's getting worse each weekend, when driving on the beach hauling a large slide-in camper. I have tried to adjust the timing by ear (rotating the distributor), but have not found the sweet spot yet. Someone suggested pouring a couple of ounces of Marvels Mystery Oil into the carb while she's running, and to add some to the oil. She has good oil pressure. Are the valves fouled, or is there something I can do short of engine work? Help!
