Looks like both vehicles did exactly what they were supposed to do. The crumple zones in front protected the passenger areas as much as possible. With newer technologies the safer vehicle is usually the one that crumples the most. Rigid structures are no where near as safe. That is why you see race cars fly apart at impact, but the driver walks away. The body is designed to absorb as much of the energy as possible.
Although personally I would not have wanted to be in either one of those vehicles.
