it appears that the 10.50x16 was originally a sand (desert service tire) still shows as option on some brit vehicles
do a google search on LRDG (Long Range Desert Group) lots of very neat pictures of early desert group vehicles - the 10.50x16 was fitted on a 6in wheel on these vehicles which would indicate (like the later michelin 11.00x16 XS (Sahara Tires) that they were designed to put a big footprint (tread contact area) on loose sand / soil
