Front Axle Lubricant Question

Manual for the early trucks says to pack front axle universal drive joints with grease. Later manual says to use 140 weight oil. Why the change, and what happens when 140 weight mixes with bearing grease on the the lower trunion bearing? Also, if you use 140 weight oil in differential as well as front knuckle as some recommend, what would be the point of the oil seal?
