The aforementioned 65 WM300 suffered from my stupidity. I accidently installed a new battery with the wrong polarity. Now I didn't discover this right away because it started and ran fine.
I noticed however that it was not charging, and then I found the incorrectly installed battery. This truck has a Leece Neville regulator and a same-make 60 amp alternator.
The mechanic said that usually reversed polarity burns out the diodes. However, it turned out to be only a ground wire on the regulator, not visible when in the truck, that had burned through. This was easily replaced and voila...it all worked again.
I guess it could have been a lot worse.
