I was in a crash last month that caused a couple of grand's worth of damage. I have a $1000.00 deductible. Next year I will take a $1000.00 casualty loss on my federal income taxes. A lot of people don't realize this type of deduction is available to them. It won't make up for the difference, but every bit helps.
