This is hear-say, but when these trucks where coming out I did some talkin to different dealers and such. The claim on the 61 was that there was/is a gear spacing problem with a dana 60 if you are using gears that are numericlly below 3.5o's. In the early years with the 3 sp-727's dodge installedd some thing like 3.02's when purchased with an automatic trans. to keep the engine rpm's down, so because the 60 chould not except these gears they made the 61's, which allowed proper gear spacing or some such. And that folks is the story I was given.
