Oldtimers say if the engine smokes under load, then it's rings. If it smokes only when you let off the gas, then it's valve guides. Have you done a compression check? If you come up with a low cyl(s) add a couple ounces oil down plug hole and recheck(make sure all plugs are removed & throttle is open) if comp come up considerably then rings are bad if it stays the same I would say valves are bad. A problem with pouring oil down plug hole on a flathead it pours on the valves first & giving it a fluid seal also. Use a oil can with a long small rubber spout and snake it to the cyl. Bill Wincapaw
