Chrysler has fewest recalls among Big Six automakers
January 2nd, 2009 by Bill Cawthon
According to preliminary figures released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Chrysler recalled the fewest vehicles among the six largest automakers in the U.S. market.

Through December 31, Chrysler had recalled a total of 360,000 cars and trucks, a significant decline from the 2.2 million recalled in 2007. In the same period, General Motors’ recalled 1.9 million vehicles, an increase from last year’s 538,000, and Ford recalled 1.6 million vehicles, well off the 5.5 million it recalled last year.

Among the leading import brands, Toyota’s total went from 640,000 vehicles in 2007 to 833, 000 through Wednesday and Honda’s numbers climbed from 550,000 to 797,000. Nissan’s recalls declined from 1.3 million last year to 581,000 this year.

The NHTSA says its preliminary figures show recalls were issued for 10.2 million cars and light trucks in 2008 and were down 30 percent from 2007. If these figures stand, they would represent the fewest automotive recalls since 1994.
