the ones i have here are from 64 and 65 on nothing but camper and trailering packages for the trucks. even lists the half ton camper and trailering options. the camper special badge and package was first introduced late 65 with the body change. before then it wasnt called a camper special even though it was the same available equipment referred to here as camper truck and trailering equipment. basically it was individual options instead of a package. these brochures lists the sizes of available campers of the time and what dodge recommended per truck to hold them. basically a fitament guide put out by the dealership for people who would run truck mounted campers or do heavy towing. the options for a half ton were simple... heavy duty cooling package, 6.5x16 tires on 4.5x16 wheels, 11" clutch disc, sure grip rear end, and a v8. there is a listing for extra cost front and rear upgraded springs, but they give no details on what they are. on the d&w200 they have a pretty large list of available upgrades and suggestions on how to combine them per application. they are...oil bath air cleaner, 40 or 55amp alternator, 3800lb front axle, 7500lb rear axle, 11" or 12"clutch, sure grip rear end, 3ton hydraulic jack, west coast and jr west coast mirrors, power assisted brakes, power assisted steering, extra duty shocks, 17 gallon under bed auxillary fuel tank, 16.5x10 tires in 6 or 8 ply mounted on 16.5x8.25 inch wheels, heavy duty radiator with shroud, heavy duty instrument cluster, engine vacuum gauge, seperate ammeter for trailer circuit, front springs at 1250lb per spring rate with 1500lb per spring rate on crew cabs, rear springs rated at 2600lbs each, and a transmission cooler listed for auto trans applications. both brocures are the same except for the added insert for 65.
ok, then i have the insert for late 65 when they went to pie plates and the double wall box. the first line reads.."new from dodge, the camper special package, a new kind of rugged pick up ready to roll with your camper coach" then it goes on to say dodge now offers a package that takes the guess work out of how to equip your truck yadda yadda yadda. the camper special basic equipment consisted of....59 amp alt, 70 amp per hour battery, power assisted brakes (not standard on 100 series), increased cooling system, oil pressure gauge, dual western type bright finish mirrors, 1250lb front springs on d100 with 1500lb front springs on d200 and 1550 on w200, 1750lb rear springs on d100 with 2600 ld on d&w200 and 3125lb on d&w200 crew cabs, and bright camper special emblems. it also states that the camper special package was only available on a crew cab with the 160" wheel base and a 8'box. it lists addition options as "deluxe camper packaqe" available in all models...everything listed in the camper special package plus fresh air heater with defrost, comfort package, hazard warning lights, variable speed wipers, windshield washer, and dual electric horns. and if you wanted to go one step furthur you could go with the "custom camper package" listed as being for sweptline boxes only. this package is the standard camper special equipment combined with the deluxe camper package plus these additional options...options include appearence package (on crew cab does not include bright drip rail molding or textured door trim panels), exterior side molding (except crew cab), chrome front bumper (except w200), and seat belts (4 on crew cab).
also note, numerous places in both brochures list that these options are only available on trucks with 8 foot utiline or sweptline beds.
also, in speaking to an older friend of mine about my old crew cab, he was telling me that when he worked for the local dodge dealer from 1963 thru 1968 they used to offer the firestone 16.5x10 inch wheel with 16.5x12 tires as a dealer installed upgrade on the rear of d200 trucks. they accepted the stock center caps and the tires were availble in 8 ply highway tires or 10 ply off road tread. with this option you got larger rear wheel studs with larger 13/16" or 7/8" hex lug nuts. there was also a dual wheel conversion available for those who wanted to go all out. other dealer options included under dash a/c, off road tires, numerous styles of heavy duty bumpers for the rear, easy off tail gate hinges, extra battery, and quick connect slide in camper wireing. he told me of numerous "dealer options" but these are the ones that relate to the topic at hand.
did this answer questions?? looks like on the four headlight trucks all options were there, just not as a package. then mid 65 hit and dodge put the camper special name on the package deal. i see a couple options here i have never seen factory installed on a truck. oh, i also have the insert for the css package, available on any truck (d&w 100&200). then there is a listing here for the 426 high performance v8 available in trucks with 122" wheel base. rated at 365hp and 470lb-ft of torque "for performance without equal in any other truck" |
