Britt, Absolutely, get that wimpy small block out of there and put in a man's engine! You want something with some real "grunt" to move that crew cab around. My 440 is in my 69 W100 (converted from a D100). My engine is a 76 Chrysler, stock other than an RV cam and kit and an Edlebrock Performer intake and 1411 carb. It idles smooth and runs great, and makes a lot of torque at low rpm. I can burn my 33/12:50X15 tires any time I feel like it, with 3:55 gears. It's a bolt-in if you get the correct parts and pieces. Like Norm mentioned, getting the correct big block bell and some of the other linkage parts is getting hard to find, not to mention expensive. There's plenty of room for it between the fenders but you will need the correct truck exhaust manifolds, at least on the drivers side, for steering clearance. I'm not sure how much of this applies to the bigger trucks as I think the engine sits lower in those compared to 1 and 200's. I wouldn't guess about the gas mileage change as I doubt you are getting much currently with the Poly. My 73 Winnebago with 440 got 7 mpg on the road, I think it weighed about 12K pounds. Here's some pics but as mentioned, I think it sits higher than it would in your truck.
This is what a big block mount looks like. It is the same for either side.
I need to get a better looking air cleaner, or at least take that round thing off of the snout.
This shows the position relative to frame and cab.
I put about 600 miles on my truck one weekend, got 11 mpg, but CRS has set in. I can't remember if that was with the original Thermo-quad and intake, or with the current setup. |
