Message:   Many trailer wiring systems are designed to have a separate dedicated ground for continuity between tow vehicle and trailer. That is, not just grounding through the hitch ball, but a wired ground from frame to frame. The 6 pin & 7 pin trailer connectors provide for this, 4 & 5 pin may not [5 pin should].

Also make sure your electric brake controller pulls power from the BATTERY, not just grabbing any old hot wire in the cab. With DIRECT BATTERY POWER to controller you always have brakes, whether anything else works or not.
