Message:   Automakers need to be flexible. You can't expect an automaker to retain 3 shifts perpetually.

The asian automakers make only the cars they expect to sell. Never more than what is needed. They amp up work force and trim down as needed. Why aren't they being criticized? Because their workers aren't union and they were hired on the premise that it might be temporary. Chrysler had been making waaaay to much inventory that would sit on dealer lots to accommodate unions? They would beg rental companies to take them...

A shift in attitude is needed to accommodate the market, not the worker. You can have a core work force called say "main shift". The second and third shifts in my opinion should not be considered core.

Now after union negotiations, new hirees will be considered 2nd tier.
