Message:   I think if I had gas, I wouldn't have simply because there is a lot less weight with the gas motor. I started showing signs of problems at 30,000 miles with the front end. Chrysler should have recalled these trucks but never did. The ended up buying back a bunch from the one state because of front end failures resulting in some accidents.
The Cummins engine good yes unless you have a "53" which will crack. Recall never issued. A recall was issued though for the vp-44 and carter lift pump except Ram trucks. On Ram trucks that was only replaced when it failed with the in tank pump. If you are out of warranty too bad. The in tank pump is good and is actually for 2003 and newer except they made it work for the 98.5-2002 trucks. Problem is the fuel pressure for those trucks need to be 12-15 psi and this pump runs 0-7 psi. The pump is fine for the common rail system which is not as critical about fuel pressure.
The killer dowel pin, Cummins knew about it...did nothing. It was the consumers place to fix it themselves unless your motor was destroyed under warranty.
If my front end would have lasted 158,000 I probably wouldn't have been upset.
VP-44s typically last 80-90 thousand miles at $2000 a pop and a gasser will last if taken care of 200,000 easily. I'm money ahead on the gasser.
Chrysler service recommends ball joint replacement at 50,000. Routine maintenance to me does not mean changing ball joints.
I know we love Dodge and Chrysler but its making me think long and hard about another one given the problems I've had.
And when did compressors and evaporators started failing on cars? They used to last the life of vehicle.
