Message:   From Allpar:
Chrysler’s board is expected to lower the boom on at least three slow-moving models when it has its first meeting under new CEO Bob Nardelli today.

While company officials will not confirm the agenda of today’s meeting, members of the board will likely kill the Chrysler Pacifica, Chrysler PT Cruiser and Dodge Magnum and may vote to end production of the Jeep Commander, which has seen its sales drop by 23% this year. These moves have been widely expected.

The actions are the first to be taken as part of a major reevaluation of Chrysler’s product line and product mix begun after Cerberus hired Nardelli as Chrysler’s CEO. The program was speeded up with the addition of Jim Press as a Chrysler vice chairman and company president.

Nardelli is not wasting any time in trimming what he sees are unproductive lines, even though it might be fair to say the company is terminating the PT Cruiser because it has no idea how to produce a viable successor. The Pacifica and Magnum, on the other hand, have never lived up to Chrysler’s expectations for them and the Commander was introduced just as the market for full-size traditional SUVs began to implode.

Chrysler’s future product line will reflect Nardelli’s focus on global growth. Although Chrysler has retained its domestic market share better than either Ford or General Motors, it is the weakest of the three in the international market. Industry watchers expect Nardelli to seek out foreign suppliers and manufacturing sources as a way to reduce costs and increase worldwide light vehicle sales.
