Subject:   Another Transmission Installation Question

Message:   I have a 71 D100 with a slant six and a 904 out of a 74 Aspen in it. Before the motor and tranny were transplanted into the truck, the car was driven into a ditch to miss a deer and it high-sided on the bottom of the tranny case, cracking it slightly. The tranny performs perfectly in the truck, but the front seal apparently was damaged in the ditch incident, and I have to pour about a quart of fluid in it every other day or so. So I am installing a tranny that I have been told was in a running 70-vintage Dart. I have replaced all the external seals, put a filter kit in it and replaced the front bushing. Here is my latest question:

Which torque converter would you use if it was you? I could use the one in the truck now...the one from the Aspen that went through the ditch incident. It seems to perform flawlessly and I think the leak is a seal issue, not the converter. On the other hand...I could use the converter I got with the new tranny...the one out of the Dart. It however, is a complete unknown to me. I never drove the Dart or even saw the car, so I know nothing about the tranny or the converter except what I've been told, which was that it was in a daily driver. My goal here is obviously to get a tranny in the truck that works well and don't leak...so I'm leaning towards using the new tranny with the old converter, which I think is OK.

What would you do if it wuz you? I could prolly go to Cadco and buy a new converter if it comes down to it, but I'd like to do this without too much expenditure of money. Davey
