Message:   In a surprising turnaround, the most militant union shops are supporting the new agreement.
From Allpar:
UAW President Ron Gettelfinger can breathe a sigh of relief. He and other union leaders won a key victory on Wednesday as members at Warren Truck Assembly, Warren Stamping, Sterling Heights Assembly and Sterling Heights Stamping approved the proposed new contract with Chrysler. The four locals voting yesterday represent about 9,000 of Chrysler 45,000 union employees.

After Tuesday’s losses at Chrysler locals in Kokomo, Indiana, the fate of the new pact was in doubt with some saying the total votes were almost evenly split. Wednesday’s results make ratification of the contract more likely, thought it’s unlikely the Chrysler deal will receive the same 66% approval the UAW gave its new contract with GM.

Despite outspoken opposition by local president Bill Parker, 65% of the members of Sterling Heights Assembly Local 1700 voted in favor of the new agreement. The margin was even higher at Local 140, which represents workers at the Warren Truck plant, as 78% of the voting members cast their ballots for ratification. Officials at Local 869 estimated about 75% of Warren Stamping’s union workers approved the contract.

The results at Local 1264 were overwhelming. Early results showed 87% of the ballots cast were positive. Local 1264 represents approximately 1800 workers at the Sterling Heights Stamping plant.

The new contract’s next major challenge comes tomorrow when workers at the Belivdere Assembly Plant vote on the deal. Getting approval from Local 1268 could be difficult because the membership includes many temporary workers who were not addressed in the new agreement.

Since ratification requires a majority of all votes cast, final results will probably not be known until the weekend.
