Message:   Good advice above! The VP44 is the Bosch injector pump, and the lift pump feeds the injector pump. Lift pumps aren't that expensive to replace and give good service once that's done. The early VP44 itself lasts for many, many miles, but a bad lift pump puts a strain on it. Earliest had no lift pump at all, just the VP44 injector pump. A new VP44 is like $1,300 or more, but lift pumps are only a couple of hundred dollars. The Glacier/Walbro kit is a good replacement.

Later 24 valve trucks received the Bosch Rotary VP44, which pumps harder and supposedly wears better, but requires some electronics.

From what I read many VP44 failures seem to be caused by a faulty lift pump and poor maintenance or attention to details. Also lots of guys try to bomb the early 12 valve up to 400-500 hp with huge injectors and wild fuel pins etc. and this really stresses the fuel pump and injector pump.

Stockers as mentioned in previous posts may not be a tire smoker but can give many troublefree miles, WITHOUT the associated headaches of electrnoics and computers. Most of the problems showed up as the trucks became more complicated with 'sophisticated' electronics.

NO AUTOS is right, and the NV4500 5-speed is bullet proof. Make absolutely sure it has the 5th gear nut upgrade or get them to knock several hundred off the price, and upgrade it yourself. I'd go 4.1 gears with larger tires though as it gives better grunt down where you sometimes need it.
