I can't think of anything that gets a discussion going faster with car guys than oil, as in what kind, how often to change, filters, etc. Jimmie, in my opinion you'd get a better deal for your money if you went to a very nice restaurant and spent the equivalent amount of money on a big steak dinner. Perhaps if it was an off-road vehicle subjected to extremely dusty and dirty conditions it might be OK, but for normal to heavy use I say the factory oil filter and recommended change frequency is sufficient, and any kind of add-on filter would be a waste of money and minimally beneficial. It seems to me that if the filter is too fine it will stop up anyway and be of no use unless you change it very often. That engine you have will probaly go several hundred thousand miles without too much care and maintenance so why bother. My father-in-law is retired from Roadway Express, was a foreman in the Memphis maintenance shop. He and I were talking trucks the other day and he mentioned that their oil change schedule was 100K. They would change the filter and top it up when it came in for other maintenance, but that was about it. You will be forced to buy reasonably good oil for your truck now, assuming that you do buy oil that is spec'd for diesel engines, so that along with a decent filter is all you will need. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. |
