Message:   Lube products are pretty complicated. The 'weight' refers to the viscosity, but that refers to the operating conditions. That includes temperature and pressure and bearing type: ball, tapered roller, bronze bushing etc.

A 90Wt grease in the can may seem about like peanut butter, but under load it's more liquid. The specific application is the key. In a chassis there's quite a bit of heat in most bearing surfaces, so a 90Wt grease softens to something like oil. In a steering gear there's very little heat, so very little softening and it stays stiff.

Some of the specs for these steering boxes say to fill the bottom 1/2 with lightweight grease and the top 1/2 with 90Wt gear oil. That way the gears supposedly get grease, the recirculting balls get oil. Dumb idea, but that's from GM and Ford. In fact the grease gets softened, the oil gets thickened and they should have spec'd the right gear oil in the first place, like Mopar did.

Sometimes 90Wt gear oil is called grease by the manufacturer. Gear oil comes in viscosities from 75 to 140, so it's even more confusing.
