Today was the last day for the Ford plant here in Atlanta (Actually Hapeville, Ga, just south of Atl.) It built various models of Fords for sixty years. It started production building 1948 F-1 pickups, and finished out it's last six years building Taurus's. This plant has been named as Ford's most productive and efficient plant so it came as a surprise to everyone when the decision to close it was announced. So much for work hard, do a good job, and you'll get your rewards, huh. The Taurus is dis-continued and Ford said it would cost too much to re-tool the plant for a new model. Atlanta used to have a Chevy plant but it closed several years ago. There is a GM plant that used to be referred to as the B.O.P. plant. They built Buick, Olds, and Pontiacs but most recently built the front wheel drive minivans. It's closing so there won't be any auto production in the Atlanta area soon. It won't be the same, but they recently announced that they are building a Kia plant about one hundred miles south of here in Columbus, Ga. To my knowledge there has never been any Mopar plant here in Ga., but we almost got the Sprinter van plant a couple of years ago. |
