Crane Cam's Tech Help section of their web site says:
NOTE: Do not use synthetic oil during the break-in period. It is not recommended to use any type of oil restrictors to the lifter galley, or use windage trays, baffles,or plug any oil return holes in the valley. Oil has a two-fold purpose, not only to lubricate, but to draw the heat away from whatever it comes in contact with. The cam needs oil splash from the crankcase, and oil run-back from the top of the engine to help draw the heat away. Without this oil flow, all the heat generated at the cam is transferred to the lifter, which can contribute to it's early demise"
I think I picked up on the synthetic from Bob the Oil guys site, when the discussion was about Amsoil
But I'd go by what the manufacturer says as opposed to a forum discussion.
I know one thing for sure, my windage tray is coming out. I would think that MMO, or that ZDDP (SP? it's the Zinc Phosphate additive) stuff or any of the additives from the cam manufactures are going to give protection when added to Valvoline or Castrol, but I agree, at an extra $12 an oil change is that what we have to live with to save our motors?
To further the discussion brought up by Gary in regards to the new motors, at least they are designed to run with the new oil and fuel, not so for 1st and 2nd generation Cummins or pre ORB III gassers... |
