Message:   Thanks, Gordo! Sounds like that process would work fine, as new metal is inserted to 'weld' crack closed. I agree with drill stop and dowels, then I brazed or else Eutectic weld with a high nickel rod. Pre-heat before welding, post-heat entire head after welding.

The pneumatic needle gun is most often used for cleaning up welds. It's a tube assembly that fits on end of air hose. In the tube is a plate with holes in it. Through each plate hole a hardened pin is placed, with a spring on pin's shaft to cause it to retract back toward air supply. Behind that is a metal piece with vanes so that air causes it to spin. That piece has a couple of holes in it so that as it spins it shoots a blast of air at heads of different needles or pins. This causes the pins to shoot out and strike whatever surface. Normally used for cleaning heavy deposits but this machine shop wants to use it to force metal in crack back together, similar to a hammer weld. Sounds bogus to me...
