Message:   Hi folks!

A neighbor has an early 50's Chevy 226" straight 6 engine, supposedly a cracked head. He took it to the only local machine shop and they want something like $2,500 to send head to be flame sprayed for crack[s?] repair plus complete valve job and surface head.

I spoke to neighbor again and now the local machine shop says they can do it cheaper: Use a pneumatic needle gun to repair crack, full valve job & light resurface for $975.

I really smell it on this one. My question regards the needle gun 'repair'. I've been a gearhead, hotrodder and machine nut for a long time and in the last 50 years I've never heard of repairing a cracked head that way. In fact I would go so far as to say it's impossible to fix one that way. I asked several times and apparently they don't intend to weld first, or drill stop the crack, or weld after, just the needle gun.

Anybody here ever hear of repairing a cracked cylinder head this way?

.
