Message:   Gary, Don't change it if it doesn't need changing. Put a socket on the crank bolt and rock it back and forth slowly. You can feel when you take up the slack in the chain. If there is over a few degrees of movement it does need changing. There is a procedure with exact specs for checking this in the FSM but it requires removing the timing cover. If your front crankshaft seal is leaking at all there's another good reason to replace them both at once.
