Message:   Adjusting Saginaw ball/roller steering:

Buy a fisherman's scale for weighing fish. Get a good one that measures lighter weights accurately, like 0-25 lbs.

Check steering gearbox for proper lubricant level.

Block rear wheels, jack up front 'til wheels are off the ground, with jackstands of course.

Remove the drag link from steering box pitman arm. On Dodges it only goes back on one way so don't worry about re-alignment.

On the side of steering box there's a setscrew with locknut [5/8" or 11/16"] for sector shaft adjustment. Loosen nut and back out setscrew a couple of turns. Jog the steering wheel back and forth from lock to lock slowly to loosen up engagement.

At the top of steering box there's a large, thin & flat hex nut locking a heavy cast nut on worm gear/shaft. Loosen locknut with a hammer and round punch or heavy screwdriver, without damaging edges if possible. Back it off a couple of turns counter-clockwise.

Move steering column shaft back & forth if possible, to check end play in worm gear. There should be no perceptible end play.

Hook spring scale to a steering wheel spoke right next to outer rim. Check pounds of pull needed to move steering wheel using fish scale. Pull should be between 1lbs and 1 1/2lbs. Adjust the cast hex nut at top of shaft clockwise [heavier pull] or counter-clockwise [lighter pull] to get this tension.

Tighten locknut on worm gear hex nut and re-check that total pull weight is still between 1lbs and 1 1/2 lbs with locknut tightened.

Next turn steering wheel fully lock-to-lock, and determine center position of wheel. You may mark steering wheel rim with tape or a twist tie to show center. Saginaw steering box is self-centering, so this next adjustment needs steering wheel centered.

Use spring scale to find highest lbs rate of pull needed to turn wheel back and forth through center position. Highest amount of pull should be between 2lbs and 2 1/2lbs. Adjust cross shaft/sector shaft adjustment screw on side of box to achieve this weight of pull. Tighten sector shaft adjuster screw locknut and re-check for proper pull.

Reconnect drag link to pitman arm, drop it off the jackstands and go for a ride!
