Subject:   Broken brakes....

Message:   Got a question here fer the brain trust.

I've got 2 vehicles with brake problems, one disc/drum, the other drum/drum. Problem on disc truck is warped rotors. Problem on drum truck is drums out of round.

Got to thinking: how the heck do the drums get out of round or the discs warped??! I mean the axle is in the center and the drum rotates around it, like a piece chucked into a lathe. There's a bearing that allows only very minimal 'play, and the shoes are designed to apply fairly equal force on that round and spinning inner surface.

I can see them wearing out, sure, but out of round doesn't really make sense to me.

Similar with the disc getting warped: center axle & minimal play bearing, even pressure on disc as rotor spins, yet they get warped.

Seems more likely that you could install a slightly out of round drum, or a slightly warped rotor, and brake actuation over many miles would correct those problems, but it doesn't work that way. Seems a real curious thing to me, and yet very common.

Ideas?
