I always buy the largest cold crank amp battery that
I can find and will fit in the holder.
This has saved my bacon more than once
when I have lost the charge system.
35 to 40 amp alts are fine till you start putting
a high load on them; they worked just fine back
in the 60s to power everything: but when you
start adding things like flood lights, tunes with
a amp, ect ect the amp use load will start eating away
at the power supply.....
Since you have EI you need to do the following
any way.....
>>> if you have not up graded to the 2 field wire system,
do so, or are use at least the "race only" voltage regulator for the one field alt.
Then you also need to look at a higher
rate out put alt.
If you still have the one field wire system
look at a late 60 or early 70 application
single field alt and up grade the volt reg.
You should be able to find
one that is rated 60 to 75 amps (no higher with
the factory alt gauge) and it should do most of
what you need, unless your going wild with
electronic stuff (plas TV, 20 speaker sound system ect.)
Stay away from the 100amp alts unless your
going to change your wires to run it
(i.e. by pass the alt gauge with heavier
wire from the alt to battery).
You can run higher amp alts with the
stock gauge wires and factory gauge and be just fine
till you use them to there limits and then
you will start cooking wires. With the
stock amp gauge stay under 75amps alt output.
The alt can be putting out 14 volts but 14 volts
does not tell you how many amps are being used
in your truck.....
I agree with Jim, check for anything that
could cause a drain and clean all ground
points well (cables-bat to engine, engine to
cab, ect)!! |
