Scuse me, Patrick, but it isn't silly at all. When you're there in the military there's a smaller world you live in due to circumstances. Many Germans had a very low regard for American military YOUTH over there because of just that: YOUTH. They'd spend every spare moment guzzling German beer, get in fights and riots regularly, tear up German bars and townships and generally make complete fools of themselves while disgracing America on a regular basis. Finally several areas were declared off limits to American soldiers!
I was not in uniform, had a normal haircut, didn't look American, and lived in my private home up in the mountains on the German economy. I had my own German business dealings, spoke German, dressed German, ate and drank as a German, lived German and had all German friends. Though it was not my personal belief and is not now I was even invited to private fasching events. That doesn't happen to too many Americans, to say the least! Do you even know what that is? Ever even heard of it? I don't even know if it's on the net for you to look up.
When I was finally leaving I was invited and strongly encouraged to stay by the Germans. That doesn't happen very often either. |
