I have a '67 D-100 that I swapped a '90 Cummins 4BT into. The 4Bt has 105Hp and 285ft-lbs stock. With some simple adjustments, a minor turbo compressor-side upgrade [HTT Stage II not installed yet], maybe larger injectors and a few tricks you can easily kick that to about 125-140HP with 400+ ft lbs torque. That costs about $400 over the price of engine.
Bought a stepvan for $1,300 out the door, drove it home. Sold stepvan without engine, fuel tank and lines for $1,400, plus I have $700 worth of Cummins parts left over.
Tranny is '96 Dodge NV4500 for a good price of $850 delivered, average is up to $1,500 delivered. Used a 2000 Cummins/Dodge adapter plate, 2000 CTD bellhousing/flywheel, 12 1/4" clutch assembly for about $800+ which is slightly below average cost. Used stock clutch master and slave thanks to some tech tips from Terry. Tom Wood's Custom Driveshaft for $150 delivered. Cummins 6B output yoke with balancer and Spicer 1410 for $50, usually $150.
Eaton Detroit front 1,500 lbs springs, about $450-$500. '70 D-200 front axle donated by DODGEUM. New front and rear u-bolts from Springs & things. New steering box [that's garbage upon further investigation] for $300. Dana 60 HD 4.1 rearend leftover from a '78 D-200 w/ a Dana Power Lock not installed yet. 8 lug all around with a set of 3 new D-range tires donated, bought a 4th. Fabbed custom rear springs from '78 D-200 leaves with stock D-100 packs, plus progressive o'loads, with coil-over shocks. About 'Heavy 3/4 ton' pushing 1 ton now. Fab front anti-sway bar, rear panhard rod. Steering stabilizer. All new brakes & lines.
Used stepvan aluminum 25 gal fuel tank and lines. Stock gasser tank should be thorouhgly cleaned first, and minimum 3/8" fuel line, 1/4" return line. Able to modify stepvan exhaust system, modify down tube, otherwise figure on at least $400-$500. New starter $200+. Made my own gearshft lever, otherwise at least $100. Spicer 1410 u-joints not cheap. Used stock radiator and Cummins electric fan. Fan never kicks on, runs 150*-180* all the time without.
Fabbed 1/2" plate steel boxes that fit inside frame rails front, bolt to top, back and bottom of frame, act the same as boxing frame. Fabbed 1/2" plate steel engine mounts to Cummins spec. that fit on frame boxes. Used '77 440 rubber isolators [too hard, need new or softer/thicker]. Remove Poly bell crossmember, fab dropped crossmember there. Fab another custom c-member using '78 D-200 donor piece to support trans tailshaft, using pair of 360 rubber isolator for mounts. Set engine/trans depth and angles so that floors came out flat, no tranny hump, with 8* driveline angle.
Fabbed new cab mounts front & rear, removed entire floors from firewall to behind front doors. Built all new 1" square tube frame boxes beneath all floors, covered floors and lower firewall w/ 3/16" steel plate [$10-$15 from the dump]. Rebuilt entire back end of truck due to 2 HARD rear-enders and one 1/2 rollover. Fabbed new rear extra-HD tow bumper from 1/2" plate and dump parts. Reworked all front bodywork, new doors. Re-wired bumper to bumper with circuit breaker load centers, removing amp gauge distribution for single lug distribution. New gauges, dash extension for toggles, lots of etc. etc. etc.
That's PART of what I did.... Runs great and will be used for extensive towing of a very heavy 26' Trailer. Average 25-32 MPG in 2.61 ton truck. |
