Message:   I was talking with a GM executive not too long ago and he mentioned to me that the biggest problem that hurts US automakers efforts to compete with asians is the unions. He said that (for example) if a worker was trained to install dashboards on Trailblazers and he finishes before noon or the line stops then he will just stand around or go home with full days pay. Managers cannot re-assign that worker to say, help Bob or sweep up. If a US auto plant tries to open up (without unions) in a new city then the other plants will strike.

The kicker is that a Hyundai, Nissan, Kia or Toyota plant can open up here in the U.S. (for "assembly" to avoid import taxes) GET THE LAND FOR PEANUTS, have reduced taxes, take the land on the cheap from farmers via eminant domain (for the benefit of the community, HA!) and not have to have unions!

I think that the unions were important 100 years ago but with instant information exchange these days it is unlikely workers will be abused by management. Kodak has proven to be competitive in the world, attract top people and have great benefits without unions.

I know there a a lot of union guys on this forum and I am not against all unions. I think that in regards to many industries particularly the auto industry the unions are cripling our ability to be competitive. These days it seems that most union dues are applied to advance political causes and not to benefit the workers anyway.

If America plans to be manufacturing automobiles in this country they need to be free from the shackles of ourselves and rethink things for modern times.
