Message:   Yes they did, but they accomplished the same effect.
The flatheads blocks that used the torque rods had the bellhousing cast as part of the block. The oilpan was also the clutch/flywheel cover too. So to do a clutch on one of Henry's 1st & 2nd generation V8's, you had to remove the oil pan ...........it took him 17 years to figure out how to put on a removable bellhousing. and the torque rods to the frame disappeared they went to the bellhousing to pan rail style only on the cast iron bells, the Merc's with the stamped steel bell housing didn't have them.
