Message:   In my experience and belief, 318-3 TRUCKS should be solid lifter, 318-1 & 2 D100 TRUCKS may be hydraulic lifter, most D200 on up 318 Poly's are solid lifter;

318-3 CARS are hydraulic lifter and most other CAR engines are hydraulic lifter for quiet operation, with the exception of high performance 3-2's and hot factory 4 bbls motors. 3-2's should be a 318-3 solid lifter engine with high-lift long duration cam, a 'built' truck engine!

Early HEMI engines were not designed for stump pulling torque but rather for screaming top end on the speedways. Somehow folks came to believe that they were an engine designed for strong bottom end. Not at all, that was just a bonus. The engine was deisgned for one thing and one thing only: RACING! The fact that it worked admirably in luxo-barges attests to Chryslers top-of-the-heap design excellence.

The Poly wasn't so much designed for racing but for solid, dependable, long lasting high performance everyday use. They also had an eye on the D200-D500 industrial truck fleet when designing so everything was overbuilt with bulldog transmissions to match.
