Message:   John, the carrier is the part of the differential that carries the ring gear.
If you stay close to the existing ratio, you just unbolt the ring and change the pinion, re-shim and check your lash and gear mesh and away you go.
As the ring gear tooth count changes, so does the pinion gear count, but more importantly the pinion gear size changes.
That means you cannot set up the gear mesh by changing only shims, you have to change the ring gear carrier. There is a Dana chart that tells you the gear carrier "break" or at what point a certain gear ratio is too big or too small to use the existing standard carrier.
It is usually expressed as 4.10 and up or 3.73 and down.

If you can find that chart, it will help you decide, when used with this chart from the DTA Albums.
Setting up a differential requires the proper tools and knowledge to get it right.
