You can change the gears and not the whole rear end.

I had 4.10 on my 68 W200 with 33 inch tires and I changed to 3.55. I noticed my rpm's drop about 500rpm's for the same mph. For example, I can cruise at 70 mph and be at 2,600rpm's. Before I would be at 3,100 rpm's.

I have another truck that I'm running 35" tires on (same gearing)and it saves about 150 more rpm's from the data above.
